May 2012 Activities
Fitness and Nutrition Activities (Adults and Youth 14 and up)-
Zumba Fitness Classes (Adult Class) - Wednesdays 5-6 PM
Dad's Basketball - Thursdays at 6 PM
Yoga Classes - Wednesdays 5-6:30 PM
Senior Exercise Classes - Mondays and Thursdays 8-9 AM
Weight Room- open hours 8 AM to 6 PM see monthly weight room calendar for availability, membership required for all Fitness activities.
Group Activities for Adults and Seniors-
Pinochle Card Playing - Each Thursday starting at 11 AM
Crafters Corner - First Friday of each month 11 AM - 1 PM, May 4th
Quilting Group - Second Friday of each month 9 AM, May 11th
Bingo - the first Friday of each month at 6:15 PM, May 4th
Activities for Youth-
Drop In Play Groups- The drop in play area is for parent and child and is available during normal business hours Monday through Friday 8 AM to 6 PM.
Nutrition Education- Harvest of the Month (HOTM) Taste Testing of Fruit and Vegetables and other presentations including Oral Health in Preschool classes each month throughout the school year.
Preschool/Kindergarten Roundup- Preschool Roundup is May 4th and Kindergarten Roundup is May 11th. We partner with the local preschools, First 5 Modoc and First 5 Siskiyou to provide support to students that are enrolling for the next school year. We distribute new backpacks with school supplies to prepare them for the next school year!
National Child Abuse Prevention Month- April was National Child Abuse Prevention month and we hosted a Poster Contest for students in grades K through 6 at Tulelake Elementary School. They designed posters that finished the sentence "I use my hands for......" Tulelake Elementary students participate year round in the Hands Are Not For Hurting Campaign. The goal of this campaign is to help end abuse and violence in homes, schools, and communities around the world. For more information visit the website at http://handsproject.org/. The Winning posters are currently displayed in the Honker Lobby and will move to the Tulelake Elementary Lobby. The posters will also be displayed around town and in local businesses. Congratulations to the students of Tulelake Elementary, be proud of your daily efforts to end violence and child abuse in your homes, school and community!
Alex Pardo a Tulelake High School Art student was selected to design and paint a mural at the Honker utilizing the Hands Are Not For Hurting theme. This project is expected to be completed by the end of summer, watch for updates! Alex will be eligible to receive a scholarship upon completion of this art project.
Upcoming Events-
We will be hosting a Children's Fair on June 11th starting at 12 noon. We will have agencies from Siskiyou, Modoc and Klamath Counties host booths with lots of free games and goodies for families. Watch for more details!
We will be hosting a "Dad and Me" Basketball Play day on June 15. Watch for more details!
Community Education Events-
Nurturing Parenting for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers Series- This series is in partnership with Early Head Start, started April 11th and runs for 8 weeks ending May 30th from 12 to 3 PM. Enjoy singing and signing activities with your child, learn new brain development games and take home an educational toy. Childcare and healthy snacks are provided. This class is currently full.
Car Seat Safety Classes- third Tuesday of each month- May 15th at 3 PM, Call to register
Mandatory Preschool Parent Meetings and One Time Enrichment workshop- May 22 at 6 PM. This workshop is in partnership with the preschool classes and provides an opportunity for the preschool teachers to distribute information and support to all preschool parents. The second half of these meetings include enrichment topics chosen by the parents with guest facilitators from throughout the county. Dinner and Childcare provided. May's topic is activities for preschoolers and preparing for Kindergarten with guest facilitator Mrs. Lyman.
April was National Volunteer Appreciation Month- Thank you to everyone that volunteered and helped our very successful Volunteer Appreciation Event that was held April 20th. Thank you again to all of our wonderful volunteers, we couldn't do it without you!
